Mid-market vs. bank rates
The rates shown here are mid-market rates — the midpoint between the global buy and sell prices at the time of the last daily update. They are the fairest benchmark for comparing conversion costs across providers.
Banks, money-transfer services, and exchange bureaus all add a spread — the difference between the mid-market rate and the rate they quote you — as their fee or margin. Some services advertise "no fees" while hiding their margin inside the exchange rate itself. Comparing the rate you are offered against the mid-market rate shown here tells you exactly how much that spread is costing you.
